Kamala Harris
Oakland native, former San Francisco DA, state Attorney General and first-term U.S. senator is poised to become the highest-ranking woman in American political history, vice president, and the first Black person to hold the office. Love her or loathe her, Harris’ accomplishment is historic.
Unions
California Labor lost big on Prop 22, the ballot measure funded by Uber and Lyft to reverse state law and make ride-sharing drivers independent contractors, not employees. Voters also rejected Prop 23, a measure to impose new rules on dialysis clinics as part of a unionization push.
Nancy Pelosi
Democrats retained the House of Representatives, where she is likely to remain speaker. But they lost seats after being expected to win 10 to 15, and with a smaller majority in 2021, Pelosi will have less room to maneuver.
